March is Nutrition Month! This year, dietitians want you to know that healthy eating is about so much more than food – how you eat is important too!

Here are some tips from the Dietitians of Canada with some suggestions from your local renal dietitians as well.

Be mindful of your eating habits

Take time to eat
Notice when you are hungry and when you are full

MRP Dietitians’ Tips:

Eat a meal before coming to appointments or dialysis treatments or bring a snack to eat before or after.

Don’t rely on juice for low blood sugars if you don’t need the extra fluid and sugar.

Watch out for over-eating and over-drinking – are you bored or trying not to waste food?

Cook more often

Plan what you eat
Involve others in planning and preparing meals

MRP Dietitians’ Tips :

Cook extra meat, eggs or vegetables to add to future meals or snacks.

Ask family or friends to help you cook and portion leftovers and snacks; give them some too.

Don’t forget to include vegetables and fruit (low potassium if necessary)

Enjoy your food

Culture and food traditions can be part of healthy eating
Eat meals with others

MRP Dietitians’ Tips :

Take care of yourself; watch your diet most of the time.

Allow yourself to enjoy those treats that are important to you!
