Signs of CKD

Signs of CKD

Chronic kidney disease can be silent and painless. There are usually no symptoms until 80% of kidney function is gone.

Kidney disease can go unnoticed, especially in its early stages, simply because it does not produce any visible symptoms (asymptomatic). The best way to check the condition of your kidneys is to ask your healthcare provider to prescribe routine kidney function tests.

At this point symptoms may start to show and can include:

  • Foaming, bloody (resembling cola or tea) or cloudy urine
  • Edema (swelling)
  • Nocturia (having to pee during the night)
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Persistent, ongoing itching
  • Bone or joint pain
  • Decreased urine output (less than 2 cups per day)
  • Shortness of breath
