It is important to properly wash your hands before and during your peritoneal dialysis treatment.

This video is a reminder about hand washing technique you were taught during training that is also available in your training manual.

When to hand wash for peritoneal dialysis:

Twin Bag

  • Wash hands before gathering supplies
  • Set up to perform twin bag exchange within reach of running water and soap
  • Wash hands using soap and water for at least 30 seconds before performing twin bag exchange and with any connection or disconnection
  • If you do not have running water, please contact your PD unit

Cycler

  • Wash hands before gathering supplies
  • Set up your cycler machine within reach of running water and soap
  • Wash hands using soap and water for at least 30 seconds before performing any connection or disconnection
  • If necessary, use your 20 foot extension tubing to enable you to wash hands – If you need extension tubing, please contact your PD unit
  • If you do not have running water, please contact your PD unit

Using Hand Sanitizer

Supplies of hand sanitizer are becoming limited because of worldwide demand. If you have hand sanitizer, consider using it only when you are not able to wash your hands with running water and soap.

  • Apply a dime-sized amount (2-3 ml) of product into palms of dry hands
  • Rub your hands
  • Rub fingertips into the opposite hand’s palm to help clean your fingernails
  • Rub between and around fingers – rub each thumb, rub back of hands
  • Rub hands for 15 seconds
  • Rub hands until they are dry
  • DO NOT WIPE OFF.
